The Sacred Common Ground
- Finding the Sacred in the Everyday-
Reconnect to the Sacred, people, and ourselves.
At The Sacred Common Ground, we believe the holy isn’t reserved for mountaintops or monasteries
— It lives in dirty kitchens, weary hearts, city streets, and simple moments.
This space is for those longing for spiritual depth but feeling out of place in everyday life.
Whether you're a caregiver, a minister, a pastor, a cultural nomad, or a leader needing renewal, you can rest.
You are welcome here.
Through Spiritual direction, retreats, and other spiritual exercises, you can reconnect with your soul, slow down, and rediscover the sacred ground beneath your feet.
What is Spiritual Direction?
One ear turned to God, and the other to you.
Spiritual direction is the sacred practice of pausing to notice where the Sacred is moving in your everyday life.
It offers a spacious and compassionate conversation, not about fixing or solving, but about listening deeply to your soul’s unfolding. As your director, I don’t take the lead. I walk beside you with presence, curiosity, and reverence.
I welcome people from all walks of life — Christian, interfaith, deconstructing, spiritual-but-not-religious, or simply curious.
Wherever you are, your journey matters. And you don’t have to walk it alone
From Anyplace, Anywhere
These meetings can be in person or virtually, and each appointment usually lasts about one hour. We typically meet once a month, but that can vary depending on your needs.
Meet Mika Roland
-
Mika Roland, MA, BSN, RN, Certified Spiritual Director
Hello, I’m Mika — a Japanese-Singaporean living in California. I’ve lived on five continents, served in both global and local ministries, and spent over 25 years as a registered nurse — 16 of those in hospice, walking alongside the dying and their loved ones. That sacred proximity to death has deeply shaped how I understand life, presence, and what it means to be truly alive.
My own story has been marked by detours, heartbreak, and the surprising grace of God in unexpected places. I offer a non-judgmental, curious presence to those who feel displaced, disillusioned, or like they simply don’t fit — especially those carrying stories too complicated to share, sometimes even with God. People who feel disappointed or angry with God are especially welcome.
I believe the Sacred is everywhere — in cultures, languages, yummy food, questions, grief, laughter, and even outside the walls of traditional religion. I especially love accompanying those who feel like they don’t belong: BIPOC women, LGBTQ+ individuals, spiritual-but-not-religious seekers, tired and disillusioned ministers, immigrants, single moms, healthcare workers, and those wounded by religious systems.
I trust sacred imagination, deep listening, and the slow wisdom of the Spirit. I don’t offer advice or quick fixes. Instead, I hold space for mystery, healing, and awe. You don’t have to be religious to be spiritual. You don’t need a polished story or a clear direction. You just need a willingness to begin.
Whether you’re in a season of loss, transition, longing, or discovery — you are not alone. I’d be honored to walk with you.
Mika is a certified spiritual director (Portland Seminary), a board-certified hospice and palliative care nurse, and holds a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Leadership from Spring Arbor University. She is a member of Spiritual Directors International.
